The Canbelto Women's Choir

Many people have asked about the name The CanBeltos.  It is a play on the singing term Bel Canto or beautiful singing.  They’re called The CanBeltos because they can really belt out a tune and have great fun in the process.

The award-winning CanBeltos choir was formed six years ago by husband and wife team, Carol and Jimmy O’Byrne.  Based in Baldoyle, the choir performs a wide choice of music ranging from pop songs to sacred and gospel music.  They are in great demand for concerts and supported Red Hurley on tour with “How Great Thou Art” – a programme of spiritual hits - in the Gaiety, National Concert Hall and Wexford Opera House at various times over 2014 and 2015 culminating in a week of shows that also featured Aled Jones. They were invited by Aled to accompany him in a series of concerts over 2016 and 2017.  They have supported Kathy Nugent in the National Concert Hall for a Stephen Sondheim celebration and appeared on The Late Late Show and the John Murray Show among other RTE appearances. In 2018, they will travel to Rome for a series of concerts over St. Patrick's weekend, including a mass at St. Peter's Basilica.

They take part every year in The AIMS Choral Festival in New Ross to great public acclaim and are winners of the Gospel Music competition taking the Tipperary Crystal Trophy in 2013, 2015 and 2016.  They are the 2016 winners of the Sacred Music Trophy, and have previously come 1st in the Irish Language Competition winning the European Year of Music Trophy.  They compete in The Navan Choral Festival too and are two-time winners of the Popular Music category, and current holders of the Sacred Music trophy.  They love to travel internationally and have participated in the Lago di Garda Music Festival, Italy, the Krakovia Music Festival, Poland, the Tuscan Music Festival in Montecatini Terme, Italy, and the North Wales Choral Festival with plans to travel every 12-18 months.

Regular appearances at The Helix Theatre in Dublin include Sing out loud, Sing out strong (in support of World Mental Health Day), and every December, Christmas Crackers, a family sing-a-long show which has become a firm Christmas favourite.

The choir have regular auditions for new members (no experience necessary, and you don't need to be able to read music).  While there is necessarily a strong emphasis on the music, everyone is also very aware of the fun element and there is a very strong social aspect to the group.
